'I have immense sorrow in telling you that, following a short illness, Carol died on 28th February last. She died peacefully, surrounded by close friends' David Genty

Carol Farrow

Carol Farrow's wallhanging 'paperworks' are created with hand made papers - painted and waxed - and a wetted clay (usually T Material, a high firing, white, grogged stoneware clay). Paper in its wet state can be cast or moulded to record a surface: it can be torn, cut and reassembled or embedded with other papers or objects. These pieces are slab constructed and sometimes are impressed with the marks (memories) of fabric or metal. Inspirations stem from architecture, costume, objects and surfaces worn, deteriorated or affected by age.

During firing, the fibre content burns out, thus leaving a lighter clay. The medium creates an almost sculptural quality, tactile and textural, whilst colour flows across the pieces, or series of pieces, sometimes intense, merging and diffusing into softer tones and hues. Paperclay is a perfect material for capturing the scratched and ‘found’ qualities of surfaces or utensils changed by the effects of use and time.

“I want my pieces to be ‘friendly’ and bring to mind objects that the viewer might once have seen or handled. I enjoy the interaction between the forms and often make composite or grouped works.” Carol Farrow

The process of working with paper can be simple or complex but the basic operation of forming paper from fibres, which as separate elements come together into a structure, is fundamental to the artist working in this medium. The process allows for manipulation and control but also surprise at all stages. Most importantly it invites change and transformation.

Carol divides her time between the rural quiet of the small medieval village of Lherm in southwest France, and the urban life of south London, working and teaching in both places. Carol will be exhibiting at the Fulham Palace fair this autumn.
